In the world of music, gifted vocalists and instrumentalists are not uncommon. Gifted composers are rarer. Shuko Mizuno is one of those musicians born to create the music the rest of the world's gifted musicians will perform. Fortunately, his innate musical ability found encouragement in his native Japan.

Mizuno began his formal musical studies in 1958 at Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku (Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music) and completed them with a master's degree in 1963. From the beginning of his university studies, Mizuno expressed a deep interest in musical improvisation, focusing on jazz and rock elements popularized in Western music. Encouraged by the tutelage of his instructors, Shibata and Hasegawa, Mizuno's compositions embraced improvisational techniques. While at the university, his passionate experimentation with compositional improvisation drew students Yasunao Tone and Takehisa Kosugi to him. Together, they founded the university's first improvisational ensemble. In the supportive culture of Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music, these pivotal relationships culminated in ground-breaking musical experimentation.

Following this seminal period of studies in Japan, Mizuno traveled to the United States to study improvisational music. This interest in western music was fueled by his time spent studying jazz and rock music with Japanese jazz legend, Sadao Watanabe. Supported generously by the Rockefeller Foundation from 1973 to 1974, Mizuno's time in New York and San Francisco allowed him to benefit from Western musical advances in jazz, musical theater, and rock and roll, which have woven their way into his compositions throughout his career.

Mizuno returned to Japan with a wealth of improvisational compositional knowledge. While his formal education had concluded, his informal education has continued throughout his life. He remains a student of the world's music, always eager to incorporate new sounds and compositional techniques. This is reflected nowhere better than in his eclectic body of compositional work, which ranges from opera and orchestral creations to pieces for television and school songs for Japanese children. Through the decades, Mizuno has given his native land a remarkable return on its educational investment in him, never ceasing to learn innovative musical methods, stretching himself to bring beautifully synthesized creations to both instrumental and vocal composition.
